Each spring, millions of birds pass over Birmingham under the cover of night. By morning, many drop into places like Red Mountain Park, a forested island in the middle of the city that serves as a critical stopover during migration.
Join Dr. Winston Lancaster, Alabama Audubon Ambassador, for a guided bird walk through the park. The walk will end at an active bird banding station led by Dr. Lianne Koczur, Science and Conservation Director at Alabama Audubon, where you will get a close look at how researchers study migrating birds.
We hope to see migratory species like the Hooded Warbler, Kentucky Warbler, Summer Tanager, Indigo Bunting, Wood Thrush, and more!
No experience required. We will have some binoculars available. Feel free to bring your own if you have them. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water.
Accessibility: This program involves approximately 1 mile of walking and standing on gravel and dirt trails with rocks and roots. There are slight uphill and downhill changes. There will be breaks along the way. Indoor accessible restrooms are available at the beginning and end of the walk.
