Join the Vulcan Orienteering Club, the Jefferson County Greenways, and the Friends of Turkey Creek Nature Preserve for a Beginning Orienteering Workshop at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve. The workshop is open to anyone interested in learning how to navigate with a map and compass, from first-time participants to hikers, runners, families, and groups looking for an outdoor activity.
Orienteering is the sport of navigation, using a highly detailed map. Whether someone is an experienced hiker, competitive runner, or just a family or group out for an activity in a park, this sport helps improve navigation skills each time. It builds map reading skills gradually, from exploring a local city park with obvious landmarks to navigating remote terrain with few, if any, man-made features.
The workshop starts at 8:30 am and includes three hours of classroom training, 90 minutes of practice, and a two-hour competition.
In this workshop, you will learn and practice:
- what orienteering is, what it is not, and how it’s used in the field
- the core skills needed to read an orienteering map, use a compass, choose a route, and navigate with confidence
- techniques to help you make a route choice and stick to it.
The cost of this workshop includes instruction, a compass, and a sandwich lunch.
Anyone under the age 15 years of age must be accompanied by an adult or someone older. Groups up to five children can have one adult per group.
Accessibility: Participants need to be able to sit at the pavilion for several hours (with breaks) and maneuver on and off trails alone. Trails will have varying inclines and terrain.
