Q&A with Jefferson County Greenways' New CEO, Darryl Washington
What drew you to the inaugural CEO position and the organization?
My longtime love and passion for the greenspaces we manage, preserve, and steward is what made this opportunity perfect for me. Additionally, the chance to be part of such an innovative public/private partnership with so many dedicated partners was the icing on the cake.
In your first few weeks, what stood out to you most about the company's culture?
I've been extremely impressed with the professionalism, passion, and dedication of the staff, foundation board, and commissioners. It's rare that you inherit a team where every employee is motivated and dedicated about the mission of the organization. My job is to retain the talented staff we have and give them the tools, resources, and support they need to master their craft.
As an outdoor enthusiast, what are some of your favorite ways to recharge in nature?
My three favorite ways to recharge in nature are: hiking, cycling and nature walks.
What’s a fun fact people might not know about you?
I’m a huge fan of the legendary music group Steely Dan. I have all of their albums, know the lyrics to most of their songs, and can decode the meaning behind the majority of their most obscure songs.
Do you have a message that you’d like to share with our volunteers, supporters, and partners?
To our incredible volunteers, supporters, and partners—thank you. Your dedication is the heartbeat of our mission. Every trail maintained, every tree planted, and every hour given brings us closer to a healthier, more connected Jefferson County. As we move forward together, I want you to know that your impact is seen, valued, and essential. We are not just preserving greenspaces—we are building a legacy of access, equity, and environmental stewardship for generations to come. Let’s keep growing this movement—together.
