Our mission
The journey of Jefferson County Greenways began with the individual establishment of three parks, each with a unique role in preserving Birmingham’s natural and industrial heritage. Ruffner Mountain, founded in 1977, was once an industrial mining site that has been transformed into a 1,038-acre urban nature preserve. The community-led efforts to restore the land allowed Ruffner to become a sanctuary for wildlife and a natural oasis in the city.
Jefferson County Greenways is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of Alabama’s natural landscapes. Across all three parks, conservation is at the heart of their mission. Ruffner Mountain focuses on reforesting and protecting urban wildlife, while Red Mountain Park transforms former mining land into thriving greenspaces, blending history with ecological restoration.
Turkey Creek Nature Preserve plays a critical role in safeguarding endangered species like the Vermilion Darter and maintaining the pristine quality of its waters. Together, these parks work to preserve habitats, support biodiversity, and engage communities in sustainable environmental practices
